What We're Doing

The NZWC is leading the adoption of circular approaches across Canada by forging national collaborations and providing support to businesses and communities.

Circular Economy Leadership Canada

The NZWC is proud to be a founding member of the Circular Economy Leadership Canada – a national alliance of leading business and civil society actors working together to advance Canada’s circular economy. Through this work, we are convening national conversations to identify opportunities for accelerating Canada’s circular economy transition, and we are supporting efforts to advance a circular plastics economy for Canada.

Canadian Circular Cities and Regions Initiative

Circular Economy

In March 2021, the NZWC launched the Canadian Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI) in collaboration with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, RECYC-QUÉBEC and the Recycling Council of Alberta. Over one year, the CCRI will advance circular economy knowledge and capacity among the Canadian local government sector – offering a national webinar series on innovative approaches and providing direct support, guidance and peer-to-peer exchange for a group of 15 local governments as they take steps to become more circular. If you are a Canadian local government interested in playing a more active role in advancing the circular economy, visit the CCRI website to learn how to get involved. The CCRI was catalyzed by our Circular Cities: A Scan of Global Approaches and Key Takeaways for Canadian Local Governments paper.

In January 2024, the CCRI released the “Circular Procurement: Strategies for Circular Criteria” developed in collaboration with the Circular Innovation Council and supported by the FCM’s Green Municipal Fund. Tailored for procurement staff, this guide summarizes through key goals and strategies aligned with procurement phases, and serves as an essential resource for mastering circular procurement practices.

It is a how-to guide for businesses of all sizes and sectors, beginning to explore the opportunities of circular modes of production and service. The guide draws on a range of existing resources and research to outline how businesses can benefit. An updated version of the original toolkit was released in August 2021.
